Most crashes will print a message followed by:

←%4FIND A WIZARD OR TYPE "CPOPJ$G".  $ MEANS ESC.  YOU'RE IN DDT.%1

If it prints this, try typing %4CPOPJ%1<escape>%4G%1 and a couple of
[RETURN]s.  If you get monitor dots, you're winning.  Type %4BEEP%1 and
[RETURN] to tell everybody the good news.  %2Don't forget to log the
crash!%1

If after you type %4CPOPJ$G%1 the same thing happens, try
%4CPOPJ$G%1 again.  If it repeatedly happens, you'll have to reload.

If the system is printing many %4PARITY ERROR%1 messages, you will
have to reset the losing memory.  If you don't know how to do this,
find somebody who does; reloading the system won't help!

If the machine has powered itself off (ie, the console PDP-11 and power
lights are off, or any of the memories), then an overtemp probably
happened.  Get help.  Do %2NOT%1 power the system back on unless a wizard
tells you to do so!

If no message was printed, or some message which doesn't look like
the example above, you will have to reload.  Try to get help
first, since this could be a hardware problem or at least a serious
software problem.

1.  If there has been a power failure, go to 100.

2.  If a message such as %4KL10 Halted ...%1 appears followed by %4>.%1
at the left margin go to step 4.  The important part is that %4>.%1
should appear to signify that KLDCP is listening.

3.  Type %4↑X%1 (ie, control-X).  The response should be %4KLDCP%1 and
a CRLF and a period.  You may sometimes have to wait a few seconds for
this response.  If you don't get a period or %4>.%1 at the left margin,
go to 100.

4.  Type %4DS%1 and [RETURN].  If you get the response %4DSKDMP%1 go to
step 5.  If you don't get %4DSKDMP%1 as a response to %4DS%1, then if
the KA10 is running, stop it and repeat this step.  If you get
%4DEPOSIT/EXAMINE ERROR IN DS%1 then perform step 102 and repeat step
4.  If the KA10 is stopped and %4DS%1 doesn't get you %4DSKDMP%1, go to
100.

5.  Type %4WAITS%1 and [RETURN].  If the system reloads and starts you
are winning.  Otherwise, if the KA10 is running, stop it and repeat
steps 4 and 5.  If the KA10 is stopped and DSKDMP still doesn't work,
you need help.  %2Don't forget to log the crash!%1

100.  If the PDP-11 is running and you are talking to KLDCP, go to
step 101.  Make sure a DECtape labeled "KL10 bootstrap" is mounted on
a PDP-11 DECtape drive that is selected to unit 0 and is enabled for
"remote" (ie, computer) operation.  Press "LOAD DECTAPE" [located
above and to the left of the red "Emergency Power Off" button] and
hold it for at least a slow count to one.  The DECtape should spin and
eventually something like %4TCDP monitor%1 should be typed.  Type in
%4KLDCP%1 and [RETURN].  KLDCP should load and type a message - go to
step 101.  If you don't get to TCDP you might try pressing the LOAD
DECTAPE button again.  If you get to TCDP and the %4KLDCP%1 command
doesn't work, you need help.

101.  If there's been a power failure you will have to reload the
KL10's microcode.  Type %4DT0 LR SU%1 to KLDCP and [RETURN].  If any
error messages are printed, you need help.  Type %4SW 37 600000%1 and
[RETURN].

102.  [%2Only if there's been a power failure or in other exceptional
circumstances%1]  After loading the microcode, you must configure the
memory adapter by typing %4I X4%1 and [RETURN].  If the system is
running with reduced memory this may be the wrong thing; check the
log to be sure.

103.  Now try steps 4 and 5.  If the command %4DS%1 gives the message
%4DSKDMP BOOT NOT LOADED, USE LD COMMAND%1, then load DSKDMP boot
into the PDP-11 by %4LD BOOT%1 and [RETURN].  If that doesn't work,
you need help.

If it says "you need help", something horrible may have happened (or
you've misread the directions).  Since you shouldn't be at this step
unless you couldn't find any wizards, you might as well go home.

Before you do that, though, you could try once more to find a wizard,
or at least another user who might know what you were doing wrong.
